Derek Gent currently serves as CEO for the YMCA / YWCA of Vancouver Island. The Y has been in existence since 1875 on the Island and currently operates health and fitness centers, childcare facilities, social housing for young mothers and independent youth, a 1200 acre summer camp, and a range of health and leadership development programs across the region.
For 10 years Derek led Vancity Community Foundation, an arms-length charity associated with Vancity Credit Union, including a complex mix of donor advised funds, hosted program delivery, corporate philanthropy, impact investing and real estate development. Prior to the Foundation, he helped pioneer the development of a social enterprise and impact investment portfolio as part of the venture capital division at Vancity, and previously served in a variety of roles at Coast Capital Savings in Victoria.
Derek has worked in management consulting and taught courses at the post secondary level in finance and community development. He started his career working in microcredit in Bangladesh, after an MBA at Queen’s University and growing up in Alberta. He is proud parent to three teenage children and has served on many nonprofit Boards, including Imagine Canada, Cooperators, SPARC-BC, Aga Khan Foundation and New Market Funds Society.
